Burial will be in the Operation in the womb gives baby a chance for life CHARLOTTE (AP) A baby born last week survived a lifethreatening deformity after doctors performed an operation while the child was still inside his mother's womb. Doctors at Carolinas Medical Center operated on the fetus with a 10-inch needle that pierced his mother's uterus and the child's bladder. Doctors then inserted a catheter that allowed the bladder to drain.

Albert Donald Weston II was born with a blocked urethra Thursday. The condition was expected to be fatal without the procedure. The infant was born by cesarean section one month early. Though still in intensive care, doctors say he might be able to go home next week. Cilenta and Albert Weston first learned something was wrong in July during a blood screening for Down's syndrome and spina bifida.

Doctors learned from an ultrasound in September that the baby's bladder was dilated and that the child suffered from posterior urethral valve syndrome. They told the Westons they could do nothing, terminate the pregnancy, or take a chance on an experimental procedure first performed about eight years ago. "It wasn't a hard choice," said Albert Weston. "It was that or do nothing and suffer the consequences. That wouldn't have been smart."
