I’m using the Taking Cara Babies method for sleep training my 15 month old. He usually wakes at least 8 times a night and I am desperate for some sleep. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to cope with the lack of sleep and I feel myself mentally breaking down. So, I found myself succumbing to sleep training.
Tonight I think he did really well to start with. He cried for a total of 12 minutes, and took less than 30 minutes to go to sleep.
I was really worried for some time, he was falling asleep standing up and I thought he was going to hit his head. Thankfully he laid down on his own.
Anyone else have to do sleep training after a year old? Is this as bad as it gets or do some babies cry worse later on?

I started it at 9 months and my LO got sick during so we stopped…when we resumed there was a lot of crying the first week and I hated it but just stayed consistent. We were bed sharing before and I was at a breaking point with our work schedules and multiple wake ups at night. It really worked well for us and I think all of our quality of sleep has improved significantly. My LO had a surgery done right after turning one and that disrupted his sleep a bit, so we co-slept again for a few days. We got right back on track very easily though. Once they have the bedtime routine down it is so worth it! Now he actually tells me when he’s ready for bedtime. The crying sucks, but stay consistent!! I wrote on the tracking sheet every night and saw a lot of improvement by the end of the first week. I actually noticed that some times the pop ins would make it worse for him so I started to do them less and really listened to if he was tired crying or distress crying… tired cry means I could wait a little longer to go in and comfort and the distress or hard crying I definitely went in to comfort. I didn’t follow her plan to a T because I couldn’t handle too much crying, and I still picked him up to rock him sometimes, but it still worked for us.
It gets better, hang in there!!

@JenSprinkle,
I started off the night time routine by telling my son that he is going to be a big boy and sleep without mommy helping him tonight. I told him where I sleep and showed him his crib and told him that he was going to stay in there all night long.
I laid him down and left the room. You can do check ins for 20 seconds after the first 5 minutes, then 10 minutes, then every 15 minutes after that. Only check in if the baby is crying. If they aren’t crying, the timer restarts when they do start crying. You do that every time they cry all night. If they wake up after 6, you treat that as the start of the day no matter what.

Just wanted to say we used TCB around 6 months and it was life changing!! Stick with it and it will be sooo worth it. My best advice is to remember that sleep training is not linear. In those first 2 weeks you can have a couple really good nights then a random bad night but don’t change anything!
For reference, my son does a 3 hr nap from 11:30-2:30 and then sleeps 7pm-6:45am every day without any interventions.
You got this!!

@Green810,
that’s amazing! I’m glad your son is sleeping so well!
My son only cried for less than 2 minutes each time he woke up last night, so I feel like he is doing really well, even if he did wake up really often. We just finished night 2 of sleep training, and I wish I would have done it sooner!
