Cincinnati won the match handily.
At one table where Cincinnati held the North-South cards, however, South had to change plans in mid-stream in order to emerge with a plus score. South's double was "negative," promising at least four hearts but saying nothing about spades. If North had chosen to pass on the second round of bidding, though, South would have doubled two spades for real. That nets 500 points, more than the value of North-South's nonvulnerable game. When West led the spade two, East must have sensed that declarer was loaded for bear in spades.
East played the seven, and declarer won the 10. At trick two declarer led a club, ducked to East's queen. Without this play, or an unlikely QJ doubleton in clubs, declarer would have to get back to dummy in the diamond suit after losing the third round of clubs. At trick three East made the unwelcome lead of a low heart. (The opponents should cooperate by leading the suit they bid.) The heart return forced declarer to banish any thoughts of overtricks.
Now the opponents threatened to score a spade, two hearts and two diamonds before declarer had tricks. A misguess in diamonds would be fatal. Ironically, the counter to East's attack in declarer's "bid" suit, hearts, was to win the heart king and lead the spade king at trick four. When East took the ace and continued hearts, declarer won the heart ace and led a club to the king. When East followed suit, declarer ran the clubs for nine tricks.
