It's cover letter season. It's a lot. For you it's a lot; and sometimes, it's a lot for me. Here's why.So it is with joy and relief that Amy Cuddy has shared Susan Cain's illustration of how sentences tend to a reader's experience. Read this. Understand this. Then, when you have activated your writing voice, #GPLLM and #LLM students, you will have built trust with me, your reader, and position yourself to write long, long, long sentences about your truly breathtaking work.Give your reader breath. #writingtips #coverletters #lawstudents #NCA #ITL

...not really common..."...sometimes I feel silly asking [these questions] since they should be common sense, but I find that common sense is not really common across cultures." Trisha F.Clarity came-in sharp through one of Trisha's thoughtful, attentive, professional emails last week. She has a graceful way of attending to the fact that as someone new to Canada, she (and many in our #GPLLM cohort) is bumping into the raw edges of the tacit and explicit ways our cultures here are different. It's exhausting, I hear from international students. But then, students also evidence their remarkable tenacity, creativity, thoughtfulness, openness to learning, and determination to get back into the work and keep on trying. In the questions she poses, Trisha helps me learn that the work I am so fortunate to do with and alongside internationally trained lawyers, is about softening those edges by making explicit the implicit. To remain curious about what else students understand and know. To listen deeply. So, University of Toronto Faculty of Law #GPLLM and #LLM students, when you ask me the questions you think are common sense, I want you to know, your questions are uncommonly beautiful. There are moments of sheer brilliance that emerge in our community - and THIS... this is one of them. Heart-full, courageous, unblinkingly honest, and clear insights into an international student's first 48 hours: I cannot wait to learn from this courageous group (including Pahul Sond, from our #LLM cohort at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law).BRING OUT THE POPCORN!
